Offset Project Registration

Entities and individuals in the agricultural, forestry, waste management and renewable energy sectors can participate in CCX by registering offsets -- emissions credits earned by eligible offset projects that sequester, destroy or displace greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  These entities may join CCX as Offset Providers or Offset Aggregators.  An Offset Provider is an owner of an offset project that registers and sells offsets directly on the Exchange.  An Offset Aggregator is an entity that serves as the administrative representative for multiple offset-generating projects on behalf of multiple project owners.

Although offsets may be generated around the world by a range of activities, they have common distinctive qualities:

  • CCX offset project owners either have no significant direct GHG emissions or have taken on the CCX Member commitment to manage their emissions under the CCX Emission Reduction Schedule.  This important rule prevents "cherry picking" and maximizes the environmental integrity of the CCX system.
  • All projects undergo a standardized registration, verification and crediting procedure.  Before offsets are issued they must be approved by the CCX Offsets Committee.  Once approved offsets must be verified by an approved third-party CCX Verifier and registered in the CCX Registry.
  • Offset projects are issued Carbon Financial Instrument® (CFI®) contracts, with the CFI Vintage applying to the program year in which GHG offset takes place (offsets can only be issued after the emission offset has occurred).
